The Academy of American Poets reports that National Poetry Month is “the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of million readers, students, K-12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, and – of course – poets marking poetry’s important place in our culture and our lives every April.” Why April? Why not? The Friends Central Library and Channing Way bookstores celebrate National Poetry Month with hundreds of books of poems. From the famous to the not-so-famous, come and experience the wide world of artfully arranged words on paper.
The CENTRAL LIBRARY BOOKSTORE
The Friends Bookstore at the Central Library is just to the right as you enter. It is tiny but exceptionally curated, with special sales that change weekly. Our “Free Books” carts are stocked daily with books that we cannot sell, but are free for you to take and enjoy, or to refill your Little Free Library! The carts are currently available during all open hours and are located outside the store by the front entrance. There are also greeting cards and CDs. And….don’t forget a beautiful Friends of the Library t-shirts – always in fashion!
Sales at the Central Library Bookstore, March 31 – April 11
Dozens of poetry books and a cartload of poetry booklets will be on sale. Poetry books are priced $2-$3 and poetry booklets will be in the 50¢ range.
And one of our favorite poems (by English poet Robert Browning) leads off a second big sale: “Oh, to be in England now that April’s there.” We’ll feature books for London travelers, for anglophiles in general, and for World War II buffs (remember the Blitz!). Miscellany abounds, including maps, postcards, and more.
The remainder of April will also include a variety of small pop-up sales to be identified in our weekly FaceBook posts.
The CHANNING BOOKSTORE
The Channing Way Bookstore is located at 2433 Channing on the ground floor of the Telegraph-Channing garage. Park in the parking structure: first hour is $1!, or, use one of the pedestrian entrances on Channing Way or Durant Avenue (note: the latter is not wheelchair accessible).
April Book Sales at the Channing Bookstore
Let’s get cooking! We have a serious overflow of cookbooks. From vegan to protein-loading, from juice to cocktail, from cookie to sourdough, from soup to nuts! Some tomes may have been your parent’s go-to basics but others are distinctly and deliciously new cuisines from every corner of the globe. Only the prices are on a diet.
If you are driving to the Channing Way store, remember that long-awaited elevator improvements to the Telegraph-Channing Garage are underway. There will be temporary impacts to access and facilities. The garage and the bookstore will continue to operate on a regular schedule, and remember, the first hour of parking is $1 in the Telegraph-Channing garage (unless there is a special event, like a home football game)!
