Welcome to the Friends of the Berkeley Public Library, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to enhancing the Berkeley Public Library through fundraising and advocacy efforts.Here you can find up-to-date information about the Friends of the Berkeley Public Library, the two affordable used bookstores, and upcoming events. The Friends work with all segments of Berkeley's diverse community--new immigrants, older adults, children of all ages, adult learners, and everyone in between. Join with us--as a member, volunteer, or bookstore patron--to help us support and expand the educational, cultural, and outreach programs of the Berkeley Public Library.

Used Bookstores

The Friends of the Berkeley Public Library operate two used bookstores. If you are looking for inexpensive books, hard-to-find treasures, popular or esoteric works, wonderful children's books, bestsellers, or gently used good reads, you'll find them in the Friends' bookstores.Proceeds from the sale of books, plus membership dues and donations, support library programs and events.

Book Donations

The Bookstores Accept

Paperback and hardback books in good condition

Videos, DVDs, CDs, audio books on CD in good condition

Textbooks and complete encyclopedias published within the last 3 years

Maps, pamphlets, and other ephemera

The Bookstores Cannot Accept

Mildewed, moldy, smelly, or water-damaged items

Books with torn-off or badly tattered covers

Books with extensive underlining

Textbooks more than 3 years old

Computer, medical, legal, health, or business books more than 3 years old

Home recorded DVDs, CDs, or videos

Magazines and phonograph records

Audio cassettes or books on tape

Book Donations

Bring donated items to either of the Friends' bookstores during the stores' open hours.

Larger donations should be in bags or boxes.

We issue donation receipts for tax purposes at the time of delivery. Donors are responsible for placing a value on noncash goods.

About the Berkeley Friends

The Friends' Mission

The Friends of the Berkeley Public Library is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to support and expand the educational, cultural, and outreach programs of the Library. The Friends work with Library staff to build collections and stimulate community interest in the Library.

What the Friends Do

What the Berkeley Friends Do

Money Raised by the Friends helps pay for:

Children's programming in the libraries, including the Summer Reading Program, puppet shows, craft programs, and storytellers

Teen programming and book clubs

Adult programming including author talks, poetry readings, Berkeley history lectures, and lunchtime concerts

The adult literacy program, Berkeley Reads

Staff acknowledgement through library school scholarships and anniversary recognition

Volunteers are the backbone of the Friends, contributing thousands of hours of service each year as bookstore volunteers, special project coordinators, and board members.

The bookstores are staffed by more than one hundred volunteers. Two- and three-hour shifts are available and additional volunteers are always welcome.Training is provided. Bookselling opportunities include:
